Join us in the fun! A day as a volunteer at the North Bay Science Discovery Day will be one you will never forget. The day is a spectacular splash of energy and excitement. Kids everywhere are happy and seriously engaged in activities that are intended to get them excited about STEM -- Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math.
The volunteer opportunities are for that one day only. The Exhibitor Gates open around 7 a.m., and we exit the facility at 6 p.m. Visitors are here from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. We have several large buildings as well as a large grass field with activities (exhibits) set up by companies, agencies, and schools. All exhibits are designed to be jaw-dropping experiences for kids.
Volunteers need to be super helpful and friendly to everyone. Our volunteers wear a white lab coat (provided by us for you to wear for the day), and the program says, "If you have a question, ask someone in a white lab coat." That means you need to be as informed as possible by reading the program, walking around the site, acquainting yourself with the exhibits, finding the bathroom locations, etc.
Any volunteer wearing a lab coat who happens to speak Spanish is invited to wear a special orange sash that says "se habla Español."
Volunteer jobs tend to be one of these (or more) job descriptions:
Parking lot helpers assist the exhibit arrivals very early in the morning from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m.
Set up helpers from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. are strong agile people who help exhibitors with their needs in unloading, carting to their sites, and locating their sites.
Exhibit workers assist any exhibitors who need more staff between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. most likely for a well needed break. These people need to be willing to interact with all ages of kids and adults.
Greeters are people who stand at one of the two main gates, welcome people, and provide them with a program for the day.
Hospitality Room needs a person to be sure the food table is clean and neat. This person is also available as the point person for any minor first aid.
Exit interviews are fun. Energetic people approach exiting children and ask them what their favorite activity was. Capturing their responses helps us with evaluations.
Clean up is from 4 p.m. until we leave, which is generally 6 p.m. We need people willing to push a broom, pick up tablecloths, take down signs, and in general be helpful and friendly to exhibitors.
If you have the energy, of course, you can do more than one job! If you have questions about being a volunteer, or if you are ready to commit to being a volunteer, please contact Carole Bennett who will be organizing volunteer jobs, or use our online form.
